Due to the increasing levels of air pollution, the vehicle manufacturing industry is beginning to consider developing alternative fuel vehicles. Alternative fuel vehicles are those that do not use traditional fuel, such as petroleum, in order to operate. It is a known fact that petroleum, when fueled to an internal combustion engine can produce emissions consisted of harmful gases. Reducing, if not totally replacing, the use of petroleum in the energy conversion will strongly impact the levels of pollution in the air.

Electric cars are just among the alternative fuel vehicles that are already running on todays roads. The name itself signifies that it is fueled by electricity and not by petroleum. However, it does not fully reduce carbon compound emissions completely, because the battery it uses also produces carbon emissions. Nevertheless these cars can reduce the rate of carbon emissions by as much as 30%.

Electric cars have a high potential of reducing massive amount of air pollution within ten years of continuously replacing petroleum-generated cars. Some prominent car manufacturing industries, such as Mitsubishi, are beginning to design electric cars for future investments. Car developers in highly developed cities like Indianapolis estimate that a third of the 900 million petroleum-generated cars will be replaced with electric cars in 2020.

As an example, 40 million alternative fuel vehicles are already on the run. Most of these vehicles are electricity-generated and do not produce any smoke. Nevertheless, Mitsubishi Indianapolis electric cars still have some significant disadvantages, including expensive battery price and limited output endurance.

Despite that, EVs are found with low running costs and maintenance. Unlike an internal combustion engine that has hundreds of parts, an EVs engine only has 5 major parts which requires maintenance. Mitsubishi Indianapolis car designers have been working on lowering the maintenance requirement for EVs by perfecting the integrating these five parts.

Another good feature of an EV is its high energy efficiency. Compared to an internal combustion engine which normally wastes a large percentage of energy by converting it to heat, the electrical energy produced by the battery of an EV is purely converted, with less waste, to mechanical energy. Mitsubishi Indianapolis car designers just need to develop battery switch technology on EVs for extended driving power.

Shopping for cost-effective, reliable vehicles is easy when youre at Ancaster Toyota (www.toyotaofancaster.ca). This Ancaster dealership can help you pick out a great car or truck, like the Toyota Tundra or Toyota Prius. They are the number one retailer for Toyota in Ontario and work hard to live up to that reputation. Whether you are looking for a full sized pickup truck or an economical hybrid car, they are waiting to assist you.

The Toyota Prius is a full gas-electric hybrid. It is the most fuel efficient car on the North American market. It is manufactured using green plastics. The plastic used in a Toyota Prius is derived from plants, instead of the usual oil based plastics used in most vehicles. The Prius also has one of the lowest emissions of pollutants. Altogether, this creates a car that is much more Earth friendly than the average automobile. It is the perfect choice for an environmentally conscious consumer.

The Prius has a number of features that create a higher level of efficiency, especially when it comes to city driving. The Toyota Prius uses its battery power to provide the minimal energy needed, and also uses regenerative braking. This helps reclaim some of the energy lost during stop and go traffic.

The Toyota Tundra is a full sized pickup truck. Its equipped to handle anything heavy duty something that Canadians expect and want from a truck. It can tow over 10,000 pounds of weight and is rated to haul over a ton in its bed. There are multiple engine choices, including V6 and V8 engines, using only the highest quality Toyota parts.

The Toyota Tundra is designed to handle construction and contractor work. A number of features are specifically designed for this class of use. This includes oversized door handles, a deck rail system, a standard built-in towing hitch, and headrests designed to accommodate passengers wearing hardhats. These same features also make the vehicle visually appealing for the North American market and suitable for other heavy duty uses.

Hybrid vehicles and heavy use class trucks both require special attention and care. Ancaster Toyota has a fully equipped service center with qualified automotive technicians.

The current battery technology is Lithium-ion. It’s a high density battery that uses relatively cheap materials compared to earlier batteries. They are built into packs that are fixed under the EV. Recharging is still an issue, but new standards for charging points are coming and manufacturers are setting up joint companies to develop common battery units that may be replaced quickly by automated stations.

Battery technology

In our conventional vehicles, the battery is used to start the engine and provide storage for electrical power produced by the alternator. In an EV the main or “traction” battery is used to power the electric motor to move the vehicle and may supply high power equipment such as the interior heater and air con. Some EVs use an additional “leisure” or “auxiliary” battery, which supplies electronic equipment such as electric windows and the stereo system.

The main battery uses lithium-ion technology and it’s made in the same sort of way to the battery we have in our conventional vehicles. It has an anode, cathode and an electrolyte. The anode is made of a carbon material such as graphite. The cathode may be made of different sorts of materials depending on the capacity and power needed. For example, lithium manganese-oxide is popular with EV makers because manganese is not high in price and is readily available. The electrolyte, which lets current flow between the anode and cathode, is made of lithium salts in a solvent.

Lithium-ion battery cells are put together into battery packs along with fuses, maintenance and control circuitry. For example, the main battery pack used in the Nissan Leaf and the Renault ZE EVs, are built-up from 48 modules each containing four lithium-ion cells and gives 360V DC with 24kWh capacity. Another example is the Mitsibushi i-MiEV, which has an 88 cell battery giving 330V DC at 16kWh. The capacity figures of 24kWh and 16kWh mean that the battery is able to supply 24kW or 16kW of power for 1 hour before it’s exhausted and needs to be recharged.

Recharging an electric vehicle battery

Charging a main battery may take hours using a regular domestic supply point. But this is dependent on battery capacity. The higher the battery capacity the longer it will take to charge from a domestic supply. The on-board charger limits the amount of power it takes to about 2.3kW. So to fully charge a 16kWh battery will take: 16 / 2.3 = 6.95 hours or roughly 7 hours. A 24kWh battery takes: 24 / 2.3 = 10.43 or roughly 10 hours 30 minutes.

A high current domestic unit that is able to supply 16A or 32A will charge the battery quicker. It’s wired directly into the consumer unit and uses a special charging connector. The connector is fitted with special control pins to tell the EV it’s connected to a high current supply. In this case the on-board charger limits the power taken to 16A (3.6kW). So to fully charge a 16kWh battery will take: 16 / 3.6 = 4.44 hours or roughly 4 hours and 30 minutes. Similarly a 24kWh battery will charge in: 24 / 3.6 = 6.66 hours or roughly 6 hours and 40 minutes.

Note that some EVs may only be charged at a rate of 16A (3.6kW) so a 32A (7.2kW) installation will not charge the EV any quicker. In the future all EVs will be able to charge at 32A (7.2kW) from domestic units. This will cut recharging time dramatically.

When out and about, there are chargers placed at car parks and shopping centers. Some are the same as charging at home using a 2.3kW domestic supply and some use the higher 16A (3.6kW) supply.

In the future as battery capacities go higher, there will be high voltage charging stations that are able to supply 22kW, 44kW and even 60kW.

Replacing an electric vehicle battery

Another option is simply to swap a discharged battery with a charged one. We would drive into a station over an area that recognizes the type of EV. An automated system would then take out the battery and put in a charged one in about three minutes. This system is ready to be used in Israel and Denmark this year (2011).

This technology needs the EV makers to agree on one or more standard batteries and put in development for simple, automated exchange.

The recall will cover seven small models, such as the family-sized eK Wagon, as well as two models produced for the Nissan Motor brand, the Otti and Clipper.

A total of 247,663 units will be recalled, according to the Japanese transport ministry.

The recall is due to a faulty engine part, which Mitsubishi says could trigger an oil leakage and light up the oil pressure gauge on the dashboard.

Mitsubishi said: “Continued use may cause parts inside the engine to burn and the vehicle may cease to operate.”

Japan’s top automakers have seen hundreds of thousands of recalls in recent months but none more affected than Toyota, as reported previously by Manufacturing Digital.

Last week Toyota announced a recall of almost 136,000 compact cars in Japan and Europe to fix a steering problem, the latest in a series of issues.
The company’s recall crisis prompted U.S. congressional investigations as Toyota was hit with a record .4 million fine to settle claims it had hidden accelerator pedal defects blamed for dozens of deaths.

In October it announced a global safety recall of about 1.5 million vehicles to fix a brake fluid leak that it warned can gradually diminish braking performance.

In the same month, Nissan Motor said it was recalling more than 2.1 million cars globally due to a faulty engine control system, in one of its biggest ever single recalls.

However, Japan’s automakers continue to show improved earnings despite the challenges that have been compounded in recent months by a strong yen, which makes them less competitive than rivals with cheaper domestic currencies.

      Faggio

This is just a little motor scooter, sort of like a moped. It’s kind of fun and quirky, but don’t depend on it for missions or for anything involving combat.
Speed and handling:The Faggio is slow, the slowest motorcycle in the game. Darn thing sounds like it has a small lawnmower engine under the hood, a really high-pitched lawnmower engine. It takes turns decently, but what can you expect when you’re not going very fast? Still, it’s handling is only fair at best.
Locations:Try Santa Maria Beach in Los Santos. Other than that, it’s kind of up in the air. The Faggio usually only appears in cities, but it’s pretty rare even then.

FBI Rancher

The FBI will uses these to hunt you down and gun you down. Normally, it’s not a good thing to see an FBI Rancher in your rear-view mirror.
Speed and handling: One of the fastest vehicles in the game, even able to catch up with the best sports cars. The FBI Rancher bounces around a bit when you hit bumps at high speeds, but it seems to be able to handle it and doesn’t spin you out of control very often. For one of the larger vehicles, it can even take sharp corners pretty easily if you’re adept with your brake controls.
Locations: FBI Ranchers do not just sit around waiting for you to pick them up. No, no. The only way to get one is to get five stars, wait for the FBI to show up, then hope you can jack one of these vehicles from them before they blow you away. It can be done, but it’s not always easy.

FCR-900

The FCR-900 is based upon a Honda, and in San Andreas it comes in three different varieties. One variety includes a windshield, which you can see in the image below. Another option is quite plain, with no windshield. A third option has the windshield as well as some plating along the sides to cover the engine.
Speed and handling: Fast. I mean, really fast. In fact, one of the fastest vehicles in the game and almost the fastest motorcycle in all of San Andreas. But there’s a downside. It’s a little slow on takeoff. And it doesn’t take those sharp corners as well as some of the other sporty bikes. But it’s still a lot of fun.
Locations:Get all silver awards at the bike school in Las Venturas and the FCR-900 is yours, to be found outside the school waiting for you. Otherwise you can find them in any of the cities. The FCR-900 isn’t the most common of motorcycles, but it pops up enough so that it’s not an extremely rare vehicle in the game.

Feltzer

The Feltzer is an all-around dependable vehicle modeled on a Mercedes Benz.
Speed and handling:The Feltzer has pretty good speed, though not quite as good as a sports car. It’s not great for taking sharp, hairpin turns, but it usually doesn’t spin all over the place and go out of control on you. Also, it seems to take a decent amount of damage. Over all, it’s a solid vehicle to be driving in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.
Locations:When you work on the Import/Export missions, and only then, there will be a Feltzer parked in Flint County near Back O’ Beyond. But otherwise the Feltzer isn’t too hard to find. They’re quite common in San Fierro, and they’ve been known to be driven throughout Las Venturas. I’ve even seen a few Feltzers in the western portion of Los Santos, usually in the more high-end neighborhoods like Rodeo and such.

Firetruck

It’s a Firetruck. What else do you need to know? Oh yeah, you’ll need this big vehicle to do the Firetruck Missions. In Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, there are two types of firetrucks, one that shoots water from a hose on top and one that doesn’t but has a large ladder on its back. The Firetruck with the ladder is pretty rare, however, though it comes into play in the very last story mission of the game.
Speed and Handling: It might come as a surprise, but the Firetruck actually has really good speed. It’s just a touch slower than I’d like on takeoff, but very soon it can fly right along. The handling is as can be expected, not too great. But what else could such a big vehicle do? The damage a Firetruck can take is monstrous, bordering on the level of a tank or a semi truck, so it can be fun to drive around at high speeds and crash into other vehicles to see them fly around.
Locations:Each city has at least one fire station, and there you can often (but not always) find a Firetruck. In Los Santos, look around the Glen Park district, especially on the South side. For San Fierro, check out Doherty for the fire station. Las Venturas has a fire station between Redsands and Redsands East. The fastest way to get a Firetruck, however, is to start a fire and wait for the firemen to show up. Then all you have to do is steal their truck!

Flash

The Flash is a tiny little vehicle, perhaps the smallest car in the game. It’s based upon a Nissan.
Speed and handling: I love this car! It’s not really a sports car, but it has excellent acceleration and top speed. And it handles like a dream, taking sharp twists and turns with very little of the back end sliding out from under you. The only downside its its durability. The Flash really isn’t any more able to take gunfire or crashes than any average car in San Andreas.
Locations: I see these cruising around San Fierro from time to time, and rarely along The Strip in Las Venturas. On very, very rare occasions I’ve spotted a Flash in the western portions of Los Santos.

Flatbed

The Flatbed is a hefty-sized truck, usually carrying boxes on its back, that looks like something the military might be driving.
Speed and handling: The Flatbed is very slow with its acceleration, but once you get going this puppy really gets going. It doesn’t handle great, though its weight keeps it from spin outing of control and/or turning over. Sharp turns are impossible. Still, the Flatbed can take a lot of damage and is so weighty you can just knock other vehicles out of the way with it.
Locations:Check out the freight depot in Fallen Tree, Flint County, because there is usually a Flatbed being driven around there somewhere. Just about anywhere there is an industrial area (such as docks or construction), you will sometimes find a Flatbed. Prickle Pine and the Hoover Dam areas often spawn the Flatbed, and I’ve seen a few by the airports, especially between the docks and the airport in San Fierro.

Forklift

Except for a mission or two, you don’t really need the Forklift, but it’s there if you want to tool around in it and see what it is capable of. Which is not much other than lifting some boxes.
Speed and handling: As you can guess, this vehicle sucks to drive. Low speed. Low takeoff. Just awful steering. Just about any turn at all will make the Forklift bounce out of your control. It seems to over-correct way to much whenever you try to make a turn. But you can get a little used to it. Still, it’s annoying.
Locations:All the airports in cities will have a Forklift somewhere. There’s also usually one at the Angel Pine saw mill South of San Fierro. The easiest Forklift to find is in a warehouse just to the South of where the Import/Export car drop is located.

Freeway

The Freeway is a pretty common vehicle in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. It appears to be a rather plain version of a Harley Davidson motorcycle.
Speed and handling: The Freeway is sort of a middle ground motorcycle in the game when it comes to speed. Once you get going it can fly along, but its acceleration is rather slow, at least compared to the sports bikes in the game. The Freeway does not have great handling. You’re not going to be able to make hairpin turns with this thing. The best you can do is kind of slowly bend into a turn. But that doesn’t mean the Freeway is an awful motorcycle, it’s just not one of the best in the game. It will get you where you’re going, and it can be fun to drive.
Locations:If you get all bronze awards at the bike school, a Freeway will appear outside the school in Las Venturas. But you won’t have to wait for that to get a Freeway. Literally, they’re all over the place. I see them often on the roads in the country, and they’re often in the cities, too, though I don’t seem to see them quite as much in downtown Las Venturas as I do San Fierro and Los Santos. Gas stations and truck stop in the country are a favorite place for the Freeway to spawn.

Ford is striving to develop new cars and trucks based on what consumers want. In order to gather thoughts and ideas from Ford owners and the general public, they developed a section of TheFordStory.com called “Your Ideas.” Since the page’s launch in April of 2010, there have been several thousand ideas posted, which users can rate and comment on. Ideas range from new safety features, to connectivity, to ideas for greener automobiles.

So what happens to these ideas posted? Are any of these ideas going to be implemented on new Ford cars and trucks rolling off assembly lines next year? The Global Vehicle Marketing Strategy Group has a team of individuals working for Ford who review those ideas posted and make recommendations on which ones should be implemented. Rick Novak, who heads up this team, explains there are certain things they look for when reviewing all of these consumer ideas.

One aspect of the ideas forum that Novak says has a big impact is the fact that people can comment on the ideas posted, vote for the ones they like, and discuss the pros and cons of each. Reading through threads of discussion shows whether most people who came across that idea agree with it, and also if anyone has realized any issues they can foresee occurring.

For example, one discussion thread was started by someone saying that U.S. vehicles should have rear fog lights like they do in England. While some people agreed this would greatly improve visibility in bad weather, more than one respondent mentioned that many U.S. drivers are not considerate when using high beams (leaving them on when there is on-coming traffic, flashing them at drivers in order to get them to drive faster, etc.), so therefore, many drivers would probably also abuse the privilege of having rear fog lights. This is something Ford could take into consideration – do more people feel this is a viable and necessary safety option, or will it just be a distraction to other drivers?

Another popular topic currently being discussed is by those who would like to see Diesel engines on U.S. cars and trucks. Many are weighing in with the benefits of using diesel, and how they would gladly buy a diesel-run vehicle if it was available on the U.S. market. Due to this discussion and a current interest in fuel economy, it is likely Ford may develop diesel-run vehicles in the near future.

So what current features on Ford cars have come from consumer ideas? Ford SYNC is one product inspired by listening to what consumers want – a way to have their iPod and phone work through their vehicle. Also inspired by consumers is MyKey keyless entry, capless fuel-filler system EasyFuel, and the Blind Spot Mirror.

Do you have an idea for a product or feature and would like to contribute to the discussions? You can find the website at thefordstory.com/your-ideas and create an account by clicking on the “Sign In” button. Once you’ve created an account, you can submit your ideas to the appropriate categories, and comment on the ideas of others.

Out of the thousands of ideas posted, what can you do to make your idea stand out and be heard? Rick Novak suggests a good way to get your idea noticed is to explain how a new feature will enhance your driving experience, and be as specific as possible. Is there something missing from your current driving experience that isn’t available on the market currently? And you don’t necessarily need to come up with the solution. Addressing a want or need, such as “I would like to see more voice command options,” will suffice.

Ford is always striving to build a better vehicle and service their customer’s needs. With “Your Ideas,” your voice is being heard. And who knows? Maybe your idea will soon be implemented on future vehicles.

Every month shoppers are looking for the best deals on new Nissan vehicles so they can save the most money on their purchase of a new Nissan car, truck, SUV, van or crossover. Almost every month the deals change based on incentives offered by Nissan to the customers and the dealers. Taking the time to search through multiple purchase or lease options can be time consuming and a frustrating experience.

In the end it is worth the extra effort to get the best deal you can on that new Nissan vehicle. So, just how do you put in the time and effort to get the best deal? The first thing you are going to want to do is visit the manufacturer’s website to see what offers they are promoting. From there visit your local dealer’s website to see what special offers they may be offering to compliment the manufacturer’s offers. Then submit an email inquiry on the vehicle or vehicles you may be interested in.

In your email inquiry to the dealership ask lots of questions. Don’t just ask how much and if it is still in stock, take it a step further and really show the dealer you are serious about buying a vehicle and getting a good deal. Use the list below as a guide and feel free to ask any other questions.

What are the current factory rebates? What are the current finance rate offers? Are there any special offers like first time buyer or college graduates that I might be able to qualify for? Do you offer overnight test drives? Why would I want to purchase from you instead of someone else?

Remember the deals can change quickly but don’t let that possibility pressure you into making a decision before you are ready. Most of the time the offers are good through the last business day of the current month, but some offers can change at different times. On the first business day of the new month they can change due to many different factors. Most manufacturers will change the offers every month at least a little bit as they react to current sales conditions.

Nissan Motor Co. has started recalling more than 130,000 vehicles around the globe for the reported ignition key defect. This figure includes 80,000 vehicles in North America. This information was divulged by the company last Thursday.

Vehicles included in the recall are X-Trail and Murano and sport utility vehicles. “In Japan, Nissan is recalling 50,962 X-Trail and Murano SUVs, which are manufactured from August 2004 to July 2006,” says Madoka Soma, Nissan’s spokesperson. “Overseas, the Tokyo-based manufacturer is recalling about 70,000 Muranos in North America, 300 in Taiwan and 800 in Singapore.” No X-Trails were sold overseas.

Nissan North America, on one hand, has reported same defect. In view thereof, it is recalling about 10,000 Maxima sedans. However, according to the Transport Ministry there have been no reports associated with said defect.

“Some of the rods connecting the ignition part with parts that start the engine are too long, so the cars sometimes don’t start properly,” the company explained. “Occasionally, the engines start even when the ignition is turned off and the driver moves the steering wheel.”

The recalls include Nissan cars that possess the so-called “intelligent keys”. The latter has integrated circuit chips within. These intelligent keys were once part of power Nissan auto parts. This feature allows the driver to open the vehicle even without inserting any key. By just pressing on the handle, the door will be opened. Additionally, the car can also start without inserting the intelligent key. Hence, accessible driving can be had with the key somewhere in close proximity.

Ignition key defect which was announced by the automaker last Thursday is not in any way related to the integrated circuit chip, which is included in the genuine Nissan parts. Said defect was traced to belong to the regular ignition part of the key.

The automaker’s shares fell 1.54 percent, which is equivalent to 21 yen to 1,346 yen on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. The sales slide is attributed in part to the reported ignition key defect that prompted the recall. However, Nissan is now aimed at making their ignition key more efficient than before so it entertains several concepts and modern technologies.

Anyone who has ever been on the market for a new car knows how easily excitement and impulse can override practicality and logic. Suddenly the gas guzzling vehicle which costs a small fortune seems like an ideal option considering the new leather aroma and shiny paint that you will get to enjoy for at least a day or two. And so what if the car has been known to last no longer than a year and a half when it has a heated steering wheel that you can reap the benefits of for one whole winter?

The thrill of such a big purchase can no doubt be exciting, but when the odometer hits 30,000 and the ecstasy wears off, you may start to wonder why you didn’t opt for a more reliable car. Even the most attractive vehicle that delivers all the horsepower you could ask for may encounter premature failure due to faulty engineering and end up costing you more than you bargained for. Considering the reliability of a car is something that should be at the top of all consumers’ lists (under the new leather smell, a shiny coat of paint and a heated steering wheel, of course). A dependable vehicle will last longer, depreciate slower, sell higher, require less maintenance and ultimately save you time and money.

To help Draper residents identify the vehicles that will last the longest, Forbes conducted research and compiled a list of the most reliable cars. One car was named the most reliable in ten categories and five of the category winners were then selected as the overall most reliable cars. It’s expected that Japanese automakers will surpass their U.S. counterparts, but Toyota exceeded that assumption by far. The Toyota brand dominated Forbes reliability list with five of the ten categories occupied by vehicles at your West Jordan Toyota dealer. The Tundra, FJ Cruiser, Lexus LX, Sienna and Yaris were all recognized for their dependability and the Sienna and Yaris landed two of the five spots for overall most reliable cars.

The 2011 Toyota Sienna landed a top five spot on the list thanks to its solid engineering and quality manufacturing. In addition to its dependability, the vehicle has been a favorite among Salt Lake City minivan drivers because of its fresh, appealing style, practicality and efficiency. Also contributing to the Sienna’s reliability is the cutting edge safety technology including a radar-based pre-collision system and a panoramic 180-degree view rear camera.

Quality manufacturing and past reliability ratings also secured a top five overall spot for the 2011 Toyota Yaris. For Draper residents on a tight budget who aren’t willing to sacrifice dependability, the no-worries subcompact car available at your West Jordan Toyota dealer won’t disappoint. Beyond reliability, the Yaris delivers agile handling, efficient gas mileage and a comfortable ride. Visit your Salt Lake City minivan dealer to test drive a number of vehicles rated most reliable.
